E.coli outbreak

More German E. coli cases as Spain considers... por euronews-en

Tapescript

Germany has announced 365 new E. coli cases as the government is in a race against time to trace the origin of the deadly outbreak.

Spain, meanwhile, is considering legal action against German regional authorities for blaming the epidemic on Spanish cucumbers.

Berlin has since admitted that Spanish cucumbers show no signs of carrying the dangerous bacteria responsible for the fatalities.

Scientists are now looking into the possibility that spinach or salads might be the cause because of the animal manure used as fertiliser.

Miguel Jimenez Aguijarte from the Murcia Farmers Association said: “I hope this problem can be solved in 10 or 15 days.”

The admission that Spanish produce was not responsible for the outbreak has come too late to halt the damage to the Spanish economy at a time when the country is mired in financial problems and rampant unemployment.

We do know who the victims are: Spain, cucumbers and organic food, as not a soul buys vegetables from Spain and the term 'organic food' is now inextricably bound up with bacteria. The question is: is it reasonable to risk such damage in the name of precaution?
The bacteria don't seem to have been in Spanish cucumbers, but where they were remains a mystery. Anyway, the cucumber salad will be missing from our menus, even though we know that it doesn't pose a threat. But people always want to play it safe, don't they?

I know the agriculture of Almería and I am very sure that bacteria is not in cucumber and another crops. The growers are very careful and they pass a lot of sanitary controls with succesful results. I believe that this problem has benefits for other countries like Turkey.

I agree with you, Juan Fco! I know you are an expert on this topic ;)
Thank you for your comment. There is only one small mistake:
... cucumber and OTHER crops.

I agree with Juan Francisco too, I think there are economic reasons in this serious incident.
German health authorities have created confusion, when they have said that the E- coli bacterium had been found from Spanish cucumbers without check results from Spanish and European scientists, now farmer and carrier sector have been badly damaged.
There are no excuse for being so irresponsible.

I agree with everybody too, but I think after a week, it has been demostrated that spanish vegetables, specially cucumbers don´t have any blame. Who pay all of expenses now? the news said about 200€ million per week. Who will change the prestigie of spanish vegetables internationally? How will they do it? and at the end Which country is the most advantage with this trouble? I think not only Turkey, Morocco,France..etc... What do you think??

Almeria vegetables have been beaten hard and our products strongly blamed for the E.Coli bacteria. How is it possible that German authorities do accuse Spanish cucumbers of being the cause of such a terrible outbreak?
The problem now is that everyone could be afraid of buying this vegetable and that would affect farmers and carriers mainly. Moreover, that fact has caused a negative impact against our weak
economy, even though Spanish politicians will demand German government in compensation for the damage.
